Siphoning of transformer oil is a common cause of power outages in Kenya. It is said that a litre of this oil can fetch about Sh30,000.

According to stories I've heard, it is used in frying chips. Apparently, adding a little of this oil to your normal cooking oil greatly increases the boiling point, and thus the cooking oil can be recycled and recycled and recycled.

The dangers of collecting this oil are quite evident. We've heard stories or witnessed 'fried' thieves dangling from transformer poles after things failed to go as planned.

Yesterday, a truck hit a transformer pole in Changamwe, and members of the public rushed to scene with jerry cans to make a killing. How dangerous.
